Summer Camp - Parents
Summer camp is a time of grand adventures and great opportunities for your son. Hohn Scout Reservation makes all of that possible in a safe Scouting environment. Our camp is nationally accredited and our staff members are highly trained and readying themselves for your son’s arrival. Classes and activities at camp are designed in an age appropriate and maturity driven structure. For our first year campers we offer a have a wide variety of basic merit badges both Eagle required and general. Our Brownsea program is specifically designed to give the first-year scout a jump start on the rank advancement process. More opportunities are available for second and third year campers such as Camping, Climbing, Swimming, Canoeing, First Aid, Lifesaving, Environmental Science and Emergency Preparedness merit badges. Older campers may choose to participate in our C.O.P.E. program, the Outback Ranger high adventure or the Sons of Daniel Boone special activities. Much time and effort has gone into designing a camp program with something to offer Scouts of all ages.
As always, Thursday night is Family night. Beginning at 5pm families arrive at camp and have the opportunity to tour camp, eat with their Scout (some bring food in) and see what has been going on all week. The highlight of the evening will be the Order of the Arrow call-out ceremony where honored campers are recognized for their Scouting spirit in an Indian-themed ceremony.
During the week, Scouts can receive traditional mail and care-packages from home. Incoming and Outgoing mail is processed daily at the camp office. You son’s mailing address at camp will be:
Scouts Name and Troop #
Hohn Scout Reservation
525 Camp Hohn Drive
Gravois Mills, MO 65037
Additionally, family members are encouraged to send email to their Scout at camp. Two email addresses are available to use for this purpose: camper@hohnscoutreservation.org and GRCSUMMERCAMP@GMAIL.COM. Please include the Scout’s Name, Troop # and Campsite in the Subject line. There is a pay phone available for personal use that is located outside the camp office. All outgoing calls must be collect or credit card calls only. The camp telephone is used for camp business and emergency messages only. The camp number is (573) 374-5761.
The forms in this section provide you with everything you will need to get your son organized and prepared for his camp experience. Please feel free to contact us at campdirector@hohnscoutreservation.org if you have additional questions.
About Homesickness:
It is not unusual for Scouts to develop homesickness during a week of camp. Experts offer the following tips to help boys make the most of their week away from home.
- Leave Cell Phones at home, or at least leave them with the Scoutmaster ‘for emergency use only’. Scouts need to be able to participate in all the fun that camp has to offer and develop self confidence away from home. The cell phone offers a ‘lifeline’ to home, friends, etc. that diminishes that opportunity.
- Encourage your son to try new things and get involved, both prior to camp and in mail/email messages during the week. Tell him how much fun you know he will have at camp and how proud you are of him. Avoid comments like “I don’t know what I’ll do without you”, “the dog has whined at your door all week”...
- Don’t make pick-up deals. If a Scout is told that he will be picked up if he becomes homesick, several things have occurred:
- The idea has been planted that he might become homesick
- He has been subliminally told that he can’t handle the separation
- He has been given an easy out rather than an opportunity for personal growth.
